With the Conservative Party winning a massive majority in the 2019 General Election, now is the time for the country to get down to business. While a lot of people are looking forward to Brexit finally happening, many people are questioning what impact the election will have on the NHS.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has claimed the NHS will be a top priority for the Government. In a victory speech delivered at 7 am in the immediate aftermath of the votes, Johnson was quick to discuss the voters who left Labour to vote for his party.

People have switched to Conservative for this vote

The Prime Minister said; “You may only have lent us your vote, you may not be a natural Tory. Your hand may have quivered over the ballot paper before you put your cross in the Conservative box and you may return to Labour next time round, and if that is the case I’m humbled you have put your trust in me and you have put your trust in us. I, and we, will never take your support for granted.”

With many rumours circulating about how the Conservative Party intends to sell off the NHS piece by piece, there is no doubt a great deal of attention will fall on the party and the healthcare sector. With United States President Donal Trump tweeting congratulations to the Conservative Party, it is only natural that people will conclude the Americans will benefit from the massive Tory majority. This is where concerns the NHS will be privatised, leading to a significant increase in healthcare costs, stem from.

The NHS needs support

However, Johnson has said that the NHS will take top priority and that there will be a massive increase in NHS funding. The Prime Minister said; “Whoever we are, rich, poor, young, old – the NHS is there for us. When we are sick and every day that service performs miracles. The NHS is this One Nation government’s top priority.”

The Prime Minister also said; “We have won votes and trust of people who have never voted Conservative before and people who have always voted for other parties. We cannot, must not, let them down. In delivering change, we change too. We must recognise the incredible reality we now speak as a one nation a Conservative party.”

No one can expect changes overnight, and in the short-term, Brexit is likely to be the number one area of focus for the Government. However, before too long, there is a need for the NHS to be backed, and a lot of people are keen to see what the Government will do.

At Atlantis Medical, we know the pressure the NHS is under, and the desperate need for support. At this point, there is no denying the Prime Minister is saying the right things. If these comments are backed up, and the promises made in the manifesto ring true, a lot of people will feel confident about the future of the NHS.

However, there is a need for vigilance and a need for swift change. The population has spoken, now it is time for the Government to back the NHS in the manner it says it will.
